Watching an art conservator in action

One of the perks of being a Museum Studies student at UF is that we get to do cool stuff- like watch an art conservator in action and be allowed to examine up close an artwork for repair!

Our Museum Registration Methods class had a unique opportunity to observe Rustin Levenson, Director of Florida Conservation Society, conduct an initial evaluation of an Ethiopian textile from the Harn Museum. During the examination Rustin pointed out problem areas in the textile, explained possible causes for the damages and enumerated course of action she might use for its repair. Harn Director, Rebecca Nagy, also joined the discussion and provided historical background of the textile and a short explanation about this particular art form from Ethiopia.

Thanks to Dixie, our Professor, for sharing this picture and allowing me to post on my blog :)

  2. Sorry Wikee, we didn't make a condition report eh. We were just observing and discussing... then we went around the galleries of the museum to look at some of the works while Rustin pointed out some that needed cleaning or restoration and why. It was very interesting!
